Newcastle:
Newcastle United Football Club is one of the famous English Premier League clubs. This football club was founded in 1892. It is also known as The Magpies, or The Toon. Its name, the Newcastle United comes from Newcastle upon Tyne where the club is based. The club came into being after the merger of two clubs, Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. There were other names suggested for the new club at that time but Newcastle United was chosen in the end. They have won 6 FA Cups among other local championships. In 1894, they adopted their famous colors: the black and white striped shirts, black shorts and socks. These colors are since their identity.
Like most the neighbors, Newcastle United and Sunderland are long time rivals too. Newcastle and Sunderland have been contesting for over a hundred years. Newcastle United is champion of the Football League Championship. They had won the League championship on three other occasions, in 1905, 1907 and 1909. The club continued their successes in cup competitions and they made it to the final of FA Cup five times. However they could win the FA Cup only once, in 1910. Although they made these successes during that period, the team suffered a 9–1 defeat by their rival neighbors, Sunderland in the 1908–09 season which Sunderland still present as their highest win. Newcaste United reached the FA Cup final in 1924. They won the cup by defeating Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium. Newcastle won the League championship for the fourth time in 1927.
Newcastle United has been at their peak around the 1950s. They won the FA Cup three times within five years. In 1951 they won against Blackpool 2–0. In 1952 they beat Arsenal 1–0 and in 1955 they won against Manchester City by 3–1. The Newcastle United football club and its players had a high profile. Their most famous players included 'Wor Jackie' Milburn, Bobby 'Dazzler' Mitchell, Frank Brennan, Ivor Broadis, Len White and the Welshman, Ivor Allchurch.
Their old hero, Joe Harvey, who was their captain in most of the successful games, returned to the Newcastle United, teamed up with Stan Seymour and rebuilt them to win the Second Division Champions in 1965. After that, Newcastle became an inconsistent and unpredictable team. They remained capable of defeating the best teams but were never consistent to make it happen.
Newcastle qualified for Europe in 1968 for the first time. They surprised the next year by winning the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which later gave became Europa League. Newcastle continued to possess a great team and their tradition to field a popular goal scorer at number 9 continued with the Welshman Wyn Davies
Harvey also brought in some talented entertainers who kept the crowd alive all the time. Their players like John Tudor, Tony Green, Jimmy Smith, Terry Hibbitt and the striker Malcolm Macdonald all became very popular among the team’s supporters. One of their most popular figures was Malcolm Macdonald who was nicknamed 'Supermac'. Newcastle supporters still give him great regard. He was an excellent goal scorer. One of their achievements was back to back win in the Texaco Cup in 1974 and 1975.
