Newcastle United Football Club:
Newcastle United Football Club has had a rollercoaster history since the beginning of the Premier League. The club has won FA Cup six times. However, the club was in a very weak position as Kevin Keegan took their control in 1992, His management turned Newcastle United back to their old standard.
Newcastle had Andy Cole and veteran Peter Beardsley in the lead of an attacking team. They were nicknamed "The Entertainers". They played on the philosophy of attack being the first form of defense. And it worked as the Club finished third in their first season. Two years later, Newcastle were even closer. Leading Manchester United by 12 points, the club slipped to the second position. Alan Shearer eased the Toon Army's embarrassment and they were again runners-up.
Managerial changes made the club fail to reach the top position since then. Sam Allardyce took over the clubs affairs for the 2007/08 season but was replaced by Keegan later that season. Very unexpectedly, Keegan was made to resign in September 2008 and was replaced by Joe Kinnear. Kinnear’s initial contract was then extended till the end of the campaign. However there was more disruption when Kinnear was taken to hospital in February 2009 and was diagnosed to have heart disease. Chris Hughton was given the management for the duration that Kinnear was in hospital. Magpies (a nickname for Newcastle United) star player Alan Shearer came back to the club and became manager for the final eight matches. However, they were beaten 1-0 at Aston Villa on the last day of the campaign.
However the Magpies bounced back to the Barclays Premier League at the first attempt. Hughton took over the job on a permanent basis in October 2009 and took the club up by leading them to the Championship title.
On 22nd December, 1892, the FA approved the name Newcastle United for the new club which was formed by combining East End FC and their rivals, West End. The Magpies (as they were nicknamed) joined the Football League in 1893. The quickly became one of the football’s best teams. They won three league titles and an FA Cup by 1914.
The team rebuilt at the end of the Second World War. Newcastle signed Jackie Milburn as their player. With his inclusion, the team bounced back to win the FA Cup three times in five years. They also achieved the highest victory in English League football, over Newport County in 1946, beating them 13-0.
Newcastle United had the European success by winning the Fairs Cup which was renamed the Uefa Cup in 1969. The club signed Malcolm Macdonald from Luton Town. Devastating in front of goal, the 'Supermac' led the club to Wembley twice - in the FA Cup in 1974 and in League Cup in 1976. He established himself as a Newcastle legend. The Newcastle United has had many ups and downs since then but players like Kevin Keegan, Chris Waddle and Paul Gascoigne have helped them maintain the standards of professional football.
